Living a Dream P17

The corridor was lit up suddenly as Gwen, Owen and Jack appeared. Medical staff scattered everywhere like leaves, staring at the new arrivals. The Doctor ran up to them, grinning with relief. He hugged Jack, "Well, you took your time!"

Jack grinned back, "Maybe if you hadn't disabled my vortex manipulator, it wouldn't have taken as long!"

"Well, its working now, isn't it? And how long did it take you, about two minutes?"

Gwen spoke up, looking fairly unimpressed, "Only because the equipment was buried in one of the deepest, darkest corners of the hub imaginable. Now can we please get on with it? Your friend's dying, isn't she?"

The Doctor stepped back, clearing his throat, "Yeah. She's just through here." He took them to the door, but Doctor Ramsden stood in their path.

"Excuse me, but you're not authorised to take this patient. She's in our care now."

The Doctor gave her a look that could have bored through her skull had his eyes been equipped with laser beams. Jack stepped in front of him, "Pardon us, ma'am, but we're from Torchwood. We have been given express permission to treat whomever we want in our facilities, and we will be taking this patient."

She looked up at him disdainfully, "Torchwood? What's that? Some sort of... lawyer's corporation? As far as I'm aware, none of you are qualified in medical treatment, and as such I cannot release this patient into your care."

It was Owen who stepped forward this time, "Actually, Doctor... Ramsden, is it? Actually, Doctor Ramsden, I am a fully qualified doctor of medicine and general surgeon."

The Doctor spoke up, "As am I." He flashed the psychic paper.

Doctor Ramsden looked at it, confused, "Is that a certificate of a High Distinction from the Queen's University of Belfast?"

He smiled, "Top of the year. Shhh."

She nodded doubtfully, "Uh-huh."

Gwen stepped forward, "Listen, Ramsden, that woman in there is a valuable asset to us, and if we leave her here she is going to die. Besides, our agency has express permission from both the government and her majesty the Queen to retrieve and treat whomever we want in our facilities. Now you will move, or I will personally issue a warrant for your arrest for obstructing an investigation."

Ramsden moved aside nervously, not wanting to anger Gwen any further.

They entered the room, which was full of hurrying medical staff. Jack stepped straight into the middle of the bustle, speaking loudly over the panicked chatter, "Right-o, medical lads and ladies! This is Captain Jack Harkness of the Torchwood Institute. I have a legal authority to take this patient to my facilities, and I will be doing so! If you could please step away from the patient."

The medical staff were hurried out of the room by Gwen and Jack as Owen and the Doctor went to work, hooking Fenn up to the Torchwood agents' miniature life support system and taking her off the hospital's. When the room was clear, Jack folded out the stretcher and between the four of them they gently lifted Fenn onto it. The Doctor pulled out his sonic screwdriver and hooked the whole contraption up to Jack's vortex manipulator. Jack typed in the coordinates of the Torchwood hub, and they all disappeared in a blue flash of static.

They arrived at the hub, and Ianto and Tosh were waiting for them. They carried the stretcher carefully into the medical bay, lifting Fenn gently onto one of the beds. Owen went to work, examining his patient and getting out the necessary equipment. The others went back out to the main area, and an oppressive silence hung above them like a Dalek ship. The Doctor turned to Jack, "Could you take me back to Leadworth, please?"

Jack looked at him, confused, "Why? You aren't leaving your companion here, are you?"

The Doctor laughed at him, "No, no! I left the TARDIS there."

Jack grinned, "Well then, in that case," he typed in the coordinates, "We can't leave that standing there, can we?" They disappeared in a flash of blue.

Ianto turned to Gwen, "Is it just me, or does Jack seem to be enjoying this too much?"

A few minutes later, the TARDIS rematerialised in the hub, and the Doctor stepped out with Jack.

The Doctor spoke up first, "How is she?"

Gwen shook her head, "No news."

"Hasn't Owen said anything?"

Ianto spoke, "No, he's busy- you know, trying to save her life. What's her name, anyway? You never told us."

Jack interrupted, "Fenn Nimear," Ianto looked at him, "What? I used to work with her, that's all."

The Doctor jogged off towards the medical bay, eager to see how Fenn was doing. Jack followed him, leaving Gwen, Tosh and Ianto. Tosh spoke up, "I'm going home. Seems like everything's quiet."

She left, picking up a few personal belongings on the way. Ianto and Gwen were left in the hub, standing in an awkward silence. Ianto roused himself, "I'll go get some coffee."
