The Doctor woke up and checked his clock. In TARDIS relative time, it was 3 am. He groaned, wondering why in the name of Clom he had woken up at this ungodly hour.
Then he heard the TARDIS rotors going.
He jumped up, pulled a dressing gown over his pyjamas and scooted down various corridors and fell into the console room.
Fenn laughed as she fiddled with the console and Amy helped the Doctor up from the floor.
"In a hurry, Doctor?"
He stood up, "What are you doing?"
"Well, I was bored and I couldn't sleep because of my leg. So I figured that I would go do something while you were catching your beauty sleep."
"Like what, exactly?"
"Visit an old friend who might be able to get Hannah back."
"So you're feeling good enough to go running around the universe on that leg now?"
Fenn winked and waved the walking stick she was leaning on at him. He looked closer, "Is that what I think it is?"
"If you were thinking that it was your first incarnation's walking stick, then yes, it is what you think it is."
"Where did you get that?"
"I went poking around in the wardrobe. And might I say, Doctor, that you keep some very interesting items of clothing in there."
The TARDIS landed with its usual bong and the Doctor ran up to the screen to see where they were.
"Don't bother," said Fenn, "We're at the Research and Development department of the Shadow Proclamation."
Amy poked her head out of the door, "Whoa. This place is high tech."
The Doctor called to Fenn as she headed towards the door, "Okay, let me get this straight. You high-jacked the my TARDIS, took it to the Intergalactic Police, and now you want to go out and explore?"
Amy pouted at him, "Geez, bit possessive, aren't you?"
He looked at her, "You're not helping, Pond! Why were you in here anyway?"
"I woke up not long ago and Fenn was doing something fun, so I figured I'd tag along," Amy grinned, "Fenn can fly the TARDIS too, Doctor. Did you teach her as well as River?"
"No."
Fenn reached the door, and called after her, "In answer to your question, Doctor, yes. I am going exploring. Coming, Pond?"
"You betcha!" And suddenly the Doctor was left alone in the control room. He shook his head in exasperation and quickly headed out the door.
They had stepped into a techno-nerd's paradise. There were half finished teleports and vortex manipulators, gravity generators, a primitive glitter gun; even an old SIDRAT sat cannibalised in the corner. Computers were beeping everywhere, and blueprints for various machines tacked to the walls. The engine of a 31st Century star ship was spread out across three work benches. Tools lay everywhere; laser cutters, welding torches, even a fairly basic sonic screwdriver. The Doctor and Amy walked around the room wide-eyed.
"What is all of this stuff?" asked Amy.
"Don't touch anything!" Fenn warned her, "And that goes for you too, Doctor. Last time I was in here, I started fiddling with what I thought was an old star liner engine, and ended up on the fourth moon of Sindacalister... and boy, did I turn up at the wrong time..."
She disappeared into what looked like a Vinvocci escape pod calling out, "Entis? Entis? I know you're in here, mate!"
A voice echoed from the depths of the pod, "Coming, coming! Can't you just wait a second, Fenn?"
The Doctor and Amy looked at each other, wondering what was going on. Fenn came out of the pod again, grinning, "He always knows that it's me, for some reason."
"Well, you are one of the few agents I know who has a Scottish accent and carries my tracker around," said a voice behind them. They whirled around, to see a lanky, scruffy young man wearing a pair of dusty black, baggy trousers, a wrinkly shirt whose former colour might have been white, and black lace-up boots. He had intelligent, bright blue eyes, scruffy, short brown hair and paper-white skin smudged with grease and dirt. He looked at the Doctor and Amy, "Who is this? Fenn, I thought I told you not to bring people in here!"
"I know, Entis, I'm sorry, but it's kind of an emergency-"
He rounded on Fenn, "Emergency? I'll tell you something, Fenn; if my projects end up on the black markets I will hold you personally responsible! You know my rules, bringing people in here is just a bad idea! Why-"
"HE'S THE DOCTOR!" Fenn burst out.
Entis recoiled, "Oh."
"Yeah."
"Sorry."
The Doctor and Amy looked at each other.
"Now, are you listening?" Fenn seemed to have calmed down fractionally.
Entis nodded, "Yeah. What do you want?"
"I want to get Hannah back. She and I got into a bit of a... disagreement... with the Agency."
Entis's eyes widened, "Did they...?"
Fenn nodded.
"Wait here, I'll look around. I might have something that can help."
He hurried off, and disappeared among the mounds of scrap metal and spare parts that were scattered throughout the massive warehouse-sized workshop. The Doctor whispered to Fenn, "Who is he?"
"Entis Parkes, resident engineer, mechanic and technology... everything here at the Shadow Proclamation. He's a mechanical and scientific genius. He keeps the Proclamation's tech ahead of everyone else and keeps the other agencies on their toes. Friend of mine, he updates my gadgetry for me. More than likely that he's put tracking devices in my shoes, too."
"Why didn't the Shadow Proclamation detect the TARDIS?"
"His whole lab is completely sealed against any form of signal, energy or outside interference; some of his machines are extremely sensitive to that kind of thing. Which means that no matter what scan you throw at it, you won't see anything. Trust me; I tried to hack his computer matrix once. It didn't work. In fact, if I remember rightly, that's how we met."
"This Entis guy seems a little weird," Amy stated.
"Not too good on the social front, is Entis," Fenn answered, "He's got a condition, like some form of OCD or something. But still, he's more normal than Ducky over here." She said, jerking a thumb towards the Doctor.
"What do you mean, Ducky?" asked the Doctor.
Amy giggled and Fenn grinned, "You're still in your pyjamas, Doc."
The Doctor looked down at his duck-embroidered dressing gown and pale blue and white striped pyjamas. "What's wrong with ducks? Ducks are cool."
Awkward silence ensured, and revelled in all of its awkward glory.
Five awkward minutes later, Entis returned.
"I might have something; but then again, I might not."
Fenn looked at him hopefully, "Really?"
"Maybe. Follow me."
You know, as soon as I thought of Eleven in pyjamas they had to have ducks on them. No questions asked.
And I'm kind of liking this Entis. I hope we learn about him a little more later on...
You will, promise.
Cool!
